This statewide music competition is open to bands with members 13 – 19 years of age; all music genres are welcome.

Last year’s winner, “Why Bother”, from Maui were a junior and senior from Kamehameha Schools – Maui. The duo, Dane Lum Ho and Kala`e Camarillo, opened for Tom Moffatt’s “America” concert at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center this past summer. Why Bother recorded their wining original single “Hey Darci” and cover song “Europa” that will be released at retail outlets throughout Hawaii.
“Band Champ is a great opportunity for all aspiring musicians in Hawaii looking to make a name for themselves,” said Kala`e Camarillo, Why Bother’s lead singer. “It was an honor to work with Uncle Tom and the competition helped us pursue our passion to play music.”
All interested bands are required to submit their entries by Wednesday, March 31.
Preliminary competitions begin in March on Kauai, Maui, Big Island, and Oahu. The taped Statewide Finale will be in April and aired on KHON (FOX) following “American Idol.”
